Why Platinum?

Better "Why not Platinum?"

eheringe-icon-trennlinie
goldschmiede-hammer-icon

For Platinum stand countless properties that make this metal so desirable:

Its incomparable colour:

White and not white, a mysterious dark glimmer surrounds Platinum like an aura and draws attention to itself.

Its imperishability:

  • no natural acid can attack it let alone dissolve it,
  • no natural flame can melt it,
  • no staining even in the alloyed state.
  • Almost no wear (due to its high tenacity/ductility and hardness at the same time) even if worn daily, platinum jewelry does not lose weight ... it's "forever".

Its purity:

Due to the above-mentioned properties platinum doesn't need to be alloyed down like Gold is. 4-5 % filler metal is enough (960 or 950 platinum) the character of the platinum is thus very little distorted.

Its rareness:

Platinum is about 30 times rarer than gold and is very difficult to win because it is resistant against nearly all chemicals.

Its weight:

How can something so small be so hard?! Platinum has a density of 21.45g/cc, the third heaviest of all metals. The second heaviest, how could it be otherwise, osmium and iridium ... are both miner products of platinum extraction. Even the radioactive heavy metals must admit defeat.

A cube of 16 cm edge length weighs about as much as an adult male, 88 kg!

This results in a high wear comfort of the wedding ring (or jewelry); perceptible but not annoying, always wears the reminiscent of the "second" ...

Its compatibility:

Its absolutely free of allergens, so no skin reactions are possible.

There is much to tell, however the most has no direct relevance to the wearing of jewelry, but for the production:

  • extremely low thermal expansion
  • not hot short (contrary to gold and silver)
  • very poor conductor of heat and therefore weldable! (ever held 1700°C without a glove? Only 2 cm away from the fingers ... )
  • etc.

Other uses:

  • Laboratory equipment for medicine and chemistry.
  • Electrical engineering; wires, contacts, anodes for electroplating baths ...
  • Gauges (the primal-kilo and primal-meter consist of the Pt/Ir)
  • Catalysts in the chemical industry.
  • Highly abrasion- resistant spinnerets for the production of synthetic fibers.
  • Main component of medical devices, such as pacemakers.
  • and much more ...

"Against" Platinum

actually speaks only one thing: its high price, but here we can make you a more than fair offer!

Hystory:

Platinum is a relatively "new" precious metal, because of it's high melting point of 1774 °C. it can't be melted by natural fire. Only the development of pure oxygen in 1772 reached a sufficient flame temperature. However, the history of the noblest among the precious metals reaches into the 3rd millennium before Christ ... The Egyptians incorporated smallest quantities in jewelry, but probably took it for silver. End of the 16th century, the French chemist Lavoisier tried to melt platinum with a burning glass. It had a focal length of 3 meters and a lens diameter of 1.2 m, but he had no success.

In the 17th century people paid more attention for the first time to platinum. It was in the Spanish colonies such as was Ecuador, but in a negative sense. Since platinum almost has the same density as gold (Pt: 21.45g/cc to Au: 19.3g/cm³) they used it to "stretch " the core in gold coins. The Spanish government sank substantial amounts of platinum in the sea to stop these practices.
From this time the name platinum comes which means "little silver" because they just couldn't do anything with it. Some diggers even threw it back into the rivers so it could mature because they thought it was unfinished gold because of its high density and color.

In 1751, Platinum finally was classified as a precious metal. Around 1780 Louis XVI., decreed the King of France, that only the king could own platinum. In 1795, the primal-meter and the primal-kilogram were made of a platinum-iridium alloy, because it is perfect due to its characteristics (see above). 1856, the first platinum melt based on oxyhydrogen was created. This made the processing of platinum in "larger" quantities possible. In the following decades, platinum took a triumphant march through the nobility and royalty. Among other things, the two largest diamonds in the world were set in platinum, Cullinan I in the scepter and Cullinan II in the crown of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (The mother of Queen Elizabeth II.).

10 Advantages of forging wedding rings yourself

eheringe-icon-trennlinie

1. Individuality / Creativity
By designing your own wedding rings, you will create unique pieces with a very personal touch and the best quality craftsmanship. Width, color, surface, engraving and stone setting all will be of your very own individual choice. No one else anywhere in the world will have the same rings.

2. Quality
When you forge your wedding rings with us, we will provide you with alloys of the highest quality (585/ooo gold, 750/ooo gold,950/ooo platinum). There is no skimping on material strength either, the weight of the ring is an important quality feature of all our rings. Furthermore, we do not perform surface coatings, because they will last only weeks to a few months which is not something we think appropriate for your wedding rings. As skilled goldsmiths, we guarantee first-class craftsmanship for your rings, therefore coatings like the industry standard rhodium plating are not necessary.

3. Ring size adjustment
In the wedding ring course, ring size is perfectly adjusted to your fingers down to a quarter size measurement. Everyone has a different style of wearing rings and even the weight of the ring affects how it is worn. Every hand is shaped differently and only with the right fit will you feel 100% comfortable and safe with your wedding ring.

4. Pricing
Forging handcrafted rings, yourself is always more affordable than buying comparable rings from a jeweler. As a small workshop, we operate on different base costs compared to a jeweler in a prime inner-city location. And of course we are happy to pass on these savings in rent and personnel costs to you. Even compared to online shops our prices are very attractive. Only with us you don’t have to worry that the ring coming to you via mail after ordering online with the click of a mouse look nothing like the pictures on the website. Jewelry needs to be held and touched, feeling it is an important factor in selecting your wedding rings.

5. The experience
Forging the wedding rings for each other together is an exceptionally beautiful and personal experience. You will always remember the wonderful time you had looking at a ring forged by your partner on your hand. It literally is an experience that welds together!

6. Sustainability and recycled gold
We offer fairtrade gold 750/ooo alloys on request. It is guaranteed to be mined and processed without child labor and environmentally harmful chemicals. In addition, you can also get a discount if you bring in gold. For defective jewelry, dental gold or coins you receive a discount on the new material of your wedding rings. It is then recycled in our refinery. Funny sidenote: this process is called "divorce” 😉 Finally, the gold comes back to us freshly alloyed making old jewelry shine new again and thereby resulting in a much more sustainable approach.

7. Trust you goldsmith
We forge jewelry every day and have in-depth training and knowledge of the various alloys. We are true goldsmiths, we are not jewelers or retail salespeople. Our course concept has grown steadily since 1986 and over 50,000 couples have already put their trust in us. Each course starts with a detailed consultation by a goldsmith who will answer all your questions and work on your design wishes with you.

8. Extensive service
Through our engravers, master setters and goldsmiths, we can change ring sizes, repair and remake jewelry, or add stones at a later date. Even after a course, your jewelry is in good hands with us. For the wedding ring course, we will even make small repairs or refurbish your jewelry free of charge.

9. Free guest at the wedding ring course
If you would like to have beautiful photos taken of you during the forging, you are welcome to bring a guest to the wedding ring course to take pictures. They may also forge their own ring (usually made of silver). The regular course fee of 110 Euro is on us for your guest! Wouldn’t this be a great thank you for the maid of honor or your younger sibling helping you so much with wedding preparations.

10. Take a peek
At the various wedding fairs where we exhibit throughout Germany, you can see for yourself how easy it is for you to forge a ring. We have a mobile workbench at all the fairs and you are welcome to "practice" forging a ring there in advance. We look forward to welcoming you and for you to take a look at all steps in detail. See you soon!

About the gold alloys:

eheringe-icon-trennlinie
goldschmiede-hammer-icon

Why is gold "alloyed"?

Pure gold is rarely processed due to its very low hardness.
To improve its wear properties it is alloyed, i.e. mixed with other metals such as silver, copper , palladium, titanium or gallium in different proportions.
The numbers 990, 900, 750, 585, 333 relate to the amount of fine gold contained in the alloy.

The numbers 990, 900, 750, 585, 333 relate to the amount of fine gold contained in the alloy.

Why is gold 750 better?

The main advantages of the 750% gold (the old name is 18 carats) are its beautiful color and its noble character (under normal use/everyday it never tarnishes).

We goldsmiths denote alloys with more than 750% resistant.
Some goldsmiths denote alloys with less than 750% no longer as gold... and they are right!

The following table shows you why:

Carat Per thousand gold in the total mixture commercially available as Weight fraction of gold in % Real atom-gold content in %
24 ct 999,5 pure gold Gold 999,5 99,95 99,95
22 ct 916,667 rounded sum 916 Gold 916 91,6 83
20 ct 833,333 rounded sum 833 Gold 833 83,3 68
18 ct 750 Gold 750 75 52
14 ct 583,333 rounded sum 585 Gold 585 58,333~ 38
10 ct 417 Gold 417 417 23
9 ct 375 Gold 375 37,5 20
8 ct 333,333 rounded sum 333 Gold 333 33,333~ 18

This means that from a weight fraction of 75% "only" 52% gold atoms are actually present. (The density of gold is 19.3 g cm² / approximately twice as high as that of the additive metals)

The fact that these 50 % (or more) are a distinct advantage can be easily explained by the properties of pure gold:

Gold is such as platinum and its by-metals, a high noble metal and can thus protect base metals by its mere presence from oxidizing/sulfiding, but only one non-noble atom per gold-atom.
Is less gold available than filler metal (e.g. gold 585 with 38 % volume) some base atoms can "fly" unprotected between the gold-atoms and can oxidize, sulfide, corrode (produce stains in gold), and in the worst case even after years of normal wearing lead to allergies or cracking!

The prejudice 585% Gold would be so much harder than 750% Gold is at the present time with new manufacturing processes and alloys simply no longer valid. (Even the old 750% alloy is only slightly softer.)

Unfortunately, some jewelers continue to spread this "argument" as so called "jewelry sales experts". The reason is as ugly as it is simple: 585% gold has a higher profit margin .... one of many reasons why goldsmiths don't like to be called a jeweler ;- )

White gold

White gold does not exist. Gold is yellow in nature and was only in 1921 with alloying additions (nickel) colored as white as possible as an affordable alternative to platinum.

At the beginning, this discoloration was achieved by using large amounts of nickel. Since it is now longer allowed to alloy gold using any desired amount of this metal (approx. 30% of people are allergic to nickel), our white gold is colored white using palladium, a metal from the platinum group. Palladium may be much more expensive but only very rarely causes allergies.
